Eirikr rauði Þorvaldsson (c. 950-1010 AD) was called Erik the Red because of his red beard and hair, but perhaps also because of his unruly temperament. It is said that he was a particularly fiery lord who, after several exiles from first Norway and then Iceland, finally settled in Greenland.

THE SAGA OF ERIK THE RED

The sagas tell us that his father, Þorvaldr Ásvaldsson, was banished from Norway in 960 AD for ‘some murders’, and Erik’s entire family therefore settled in Iceland. Here Erik the Red married Thjodhilde, but his father’s fate soon overtook him. In 982 he was sentenced to three years’ exile from Iceland for murder.

World Heritage

Brattahlíð or Brattahlid was the farm of Erik the Red by Eriksfjorden in Southwest Greenland.
The farm is believed to have been located in the present-day Greenlandic settlement of Qassiarsuk.

Kujataa is a subarctic agricultural area in Greenland, which is the ninth World Heritage Site in the Danish Commonwealth, and it is the second World Heritage Site in Greenland.
