Ginnungagap, void that existed before creation. It is described in the Edda poem Vølvens Spådom as without sand, waves, grass, plants, earth or sky. Snorri says that the gap lies between the cold icy realm of Niflheim in the north and the hot fiery Muspelheim in the south, and that the cosmos arises from the meeting of the opposing natural phenomena in the space of chaos. In Ginnungagap, the first living being, the primeval giant Ymer, is created, and later, among others, the cow Audhumbla.
The word is Old Norse and possibly means “the very large gap”.
