Text 1:
The Norwegian Thorvald Arvaldson (born 925) has been declared an outlaw and flees Norway with his son Erik (the Red)

Text 2:
Thorvald and Erik settle on Drangar in Iceland after a hard voyage across the North Sea

 

Text 3:
Woman sprang pantyhose legs

 

Text 4:
Thorvald dies. Erik marries Tjodhil. They have a son, Leif, in the year 975

 

Text 5:
Leif is taught sailing and fighting techniques, about the sagas – and he learned to carve runes.
Erik is quarrelsome and becomes friends with his neighbor

 

Text 6:
Erik takes back his high-ranking supporters by force and kills his friend’s two sons

 

Text 7:
The Thing sentences Erik to three years as an outlaw for murder and violence against neighbors

Text 8:
Erik sails west with family and slaves

Text 9:
He finds Greenland – a fertile land with enough grass for his livestock.
He establishes Brattahlid

 

Text 10:
Leif goes on a trading trip to Scotland. On the trip he falls in love with Thorgunna

Text 11:
On a journey to Norway, Leif and his followers are baptized into the Christian faith

Text 12:
Thorgunna comes to Greenland with her and Leif’s son

Text 13:
Erik does not want to be baptized
He sacrifices a goat to the Aesir

 

 

Text 14:
Tjodhild is baptized and Erik must build a church at Brathalid

 

Text 15:
Erik equips a boat to explore the sea

 

Text 16:
His horse stumbles on the way to the ship
Erik takes it as a sign and lets Leif travel instead

Text 17:
Leif sails west and finds North America which he calls Vinland

 

Text 18:
Ginnungagab means gaping void according to the Norse creation myth

Ginnungagab
In the 15th century, cartographers wanted to investigate where the creation myth originated and whether Ginnungagab could be located geographically – the sea between Greenland and Vinland
Suggested by Adam of Bremen as early as around 1100

 

Text 20:
Leif and his crew winter in Vinland

 

 

Text 21:
Leif returns to Greenland. On the way home he rescues a group of shipwrecked people

 

Text 22:
Among the shipwrecked was Gudrid, who later gave birth to her son Snorri in Vinland. Gudrid was more traveled than any other woman of that time. After her journey to Rome, she settled in Iceland
