A new and different embroidery:
The tapestry about Erik the Red.
After embroidering 70 meters on the Danish copy of the Bayeux Tapestry and the 3.10 m on a finishing touch, we felt like continuing to meet and embroider.
A proposal came up to make a tapestry about the Saga of Erik the Red.
We talked a lot about using the template from the Bayeux Tapestry, i.e. that there is a central frieze and a narrow frieze at the top and bottom.
At the same time, we agreed to “let loose” and use all the techniques we wanted.
This means that the following has already been used: Contour stitches, dropped stitching, a mixture of sewn-on fabric, which in some places is covered with embroidery stitches, and a mixture of colors.
The central frieze, like the Bayeux Tapestry, was to tell the main story – here about Erik the Red – and the narrow friezes were to tell about objects found by archaeologists in Iceland, Greenland and Vinland (Lance of Meadows) mixed with images of flora and fauna.
Furthermore, there are more women on the Erik the Red Tapestry than on the Bayeux Tapestry and more is shown about everyday life in the Viking Age.
Anny Svendsen has made drawings for the 10 m long tapestry and we will decide on the technique and colors that we come up with. There are 30 colors to choose from.
The first stitch
Anny Svendsen took the first stitch on the tapestry at the Viking Market on Lindholm Høje on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 10:30 a.m.
